A medical suction machine is a tool used to drain fluids from the body. It creates a partial vacuum that is pressed into the area of the body that needs something drained out. A suction machine can be used to remove unwanted fluids, such as mucus and serum. Suction machines are also used in tracheotomy. Patients who undergo a tracheotomy need to have suction to maintain the clarity of the airways. Suction machines are also used to remove fluids or unwanted objects from the stomach in a procedure known as gastric suction. Portable suction machines are small, compact devices that are carried by ambulances and may be kept in medical facilities for emergency use in clearing a patient's airway of vomit and secretions. Portable suction units consist of a suction canister, tubing and the mechanical unit, which may run from battery or on-board power inside a portable case.
