There are many negative medical complications that can occur when an individual is immobilized and blood flow is restricted by a normal bed.  One of the most commonly known issues is pressure ulcers which result from an inability to make blood circulate properly throughout the body.  An alternating pressure mattress and low air loss (LAL) mattress are designed to prevent and help heal bed sores and pressure ulcers.  The mattress is comprised of air cells that are constantly alternating between inflation and deflation to help redistribute weight, relieve pressure, and stimulate blood flow.  A variety of skin ulcerations are able to be prevented or dramatically healed with this technology. Caregivers are constantly having to assist an immobile individual move limbs or alternate from side to side to prevent pressure ulcers from occurring.  Low air loss (LAL) mattresses are specially designed to prevent moisture and heat buildup on the skin, another common cause of bedsores. Unalleviated pressure results in lesions which ultimately become a health risk if left untreated.  Alternating pressure and low air loss (LAL) mattresses are a proven way of providing the necessary redistribution of weight to prevent these painful skin ulcers.  No matter what stage the sore may be, there is a therapeutic mattress with alternating pressure and/or low air loss (LAL) features that will help an individual stay comfortable and healthy while immobilized.
